What Is The 5 Minute Social Media Strategy?

This is a baseline strategy meant to help social media managers who are also small business owners successfully plan to get high returns from their social media properties.

The #1 problem with social strategy is that there are no ‘best practices’ that will help a business owner navigate the unpredictable and often expensive social landscape. Use this strategy to sort out your content, your tactics and your results.

Minute 1: Jot Down Your Tiered Mission

Take your first minute, grab a piece of paper and jot down the heading ‘mission.’ Your mission is the WHY of your social media strategy.

• Write a list of 5 reasons why you want to use social media
• Arrange them in order of importance

Minute 2: Focus on Your Tiered Goals

During your second minute, you are going to add ‘goals’ to your rough strategy page. Your goals are the WHAT of your social media strategy. What do you want to accomplish?

• Create a list of 5 goals that you want to achieve with your social strategies
• Arrange them in order of importance

*Tiered strategies help you stay focused on what matters most. When in doubt, always align your tactics with your #1 goal. Work your way back from there.

Minute 3: List Your Dominant Social Properties

By minute 3 you are on a roll. You will need to find out which social media properties you want to focus on, then answer the tiered WHERE question.

• Name 3 primary and 2 secondary social media platforms
• Arrange them in order of importance

*Do some basic competitor research, and see which social sites get the most niche engagement in your industry. I would suggest Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

Minute 4: Define Your Tactics In Specialist Detail

When you reach your fourth minute you will need to clearly define the tactics that you are going to use to achieve your strategy goals. This is the HOW of your strategy!

• Under each platform write down as many ‘tactics’ as you can
• If you don’t know of any tactics, first research and then jot them down
• Arrange them in order of expected ROI and impact

*Tactic: Gain more Facebook fans – add a call to action at the end of each update. (Describe your researched, template formula for high-conversion calls to action)

Minute 5: Record The On-Page Metrics Details

This is your final minute! At the end of each week, record the metric data from each of your platforms on an Excel spreadsheet. Learn to draw insights from them!

• Record each analytics detail from each platform
• Tier them in order of importance or impact
• Draw basic conclusions from them, jot down action words
• Take action, make the changes to your strategy

After this, simply rinse, wash, repeat! A small business social media strategist won’t have any trouble starting out with a strategy as easy as this one. As you go along you will learn all sorts of things. Turn your ragged piece of paper into an online Excel database and start the cycle of constant improvement to get to your high ROI goals!
