One of the most difficult things to do as a small business online, is to prompt responses from your social media communities. Interaction is the key to social media success, and without it – your pages will deter fans that are interested in your niche. But there are ways to increase your brand popularity, and get higher response rates from your fans. Use any one of these great tips to get more fan interaction!

Smashing Through The Facebook Algorithm

We briefly discussed the importance of Facebook edgerank in this post – but it really is the key to interaction on Facebook. To get your posts in the much desired ‘top news’ streams of your community members, you need an edgerank plan.

  • Edgerank calculates how close your relationship is with your fans. That means the more they interact with you, the more of your posts they’ll see.
  • It also calculates how they respond – is it a like? A one click answer? Do they tag images? Comments are the most desirable form of interaction here.
  • Edgerank is also rather particular about relevancy and currency. Are your posts fresh, news related or time-sensitive?

To get people to like your content, you need a high edgerank score. When businesses post images, videos, links and apps – they’re not doing this because it fills their pages, they’re doing this to increase their edgerank score. People are more likely to ‘like’ posts that are visible and packed with interactive media.

Facebook Hot Tip! Get a branded game app created for your business. This improves all three of the edgerank algorithm parameters. It also keeps fans on your page, and if it’s competitive (leader board or badge awards) they’ll post about it – essentially making your app, and business brand go viral. Did you know 20 million apps are installed on Facebook every day? Get some of that action!

Someone Please Tweet With Me

Twitter is actually fairly similar to Facebook interaction – but what you need to target are the other professionals in your niche. By now, you should be aggregating content, and curating it – reposting these excellent links on your Twitter page. Have you ever noticed how links are retweeted most often? Let’s face it, who can convince people to be interested in 140 characters! It’s your link that will make all the difference. Don’t forget to personalize each link, and make it a cliff-hanger!

You Can Also:

  • Share intimate, expert and insightful comments that teach, are packed with wisdom or are just plain entertaining. Relating to your community is important – have you ever tweeted ‘It’s Friday at 12pm, and I’m still working! ’ It resonates with every other overworked tweeter out there. More retweets and replies await you.
  • Spend time retweeting the best of your community members links.
  • Advertise a live twitter discussion, create a group and answer niche relate questions. Nothing like real-time tweeting to encourage sharing.
  • This should go without saying – but please don’t forget your hashtags!

Another exceptional method of encouraging social interaction on any platform, is to approach people via their marketing methods, comments, posts and media. You don’t always have to be the leader. Sometimes it’s better to meet people and strike up a conversation on their pages. Then you can take the relationship to yours.

The Art of Sharing

Sharing begins with being a sharing person online. When you share, it will encourage others to share with you. Response time is also instrumental to owning lively social media pages. Who wants to interact with someone when they don’t reply? It’s also important to remember to reach people across all platforms.

If someone becomes your Facebook friend, see if they’re on Twitter and reference how you met them. Another instant connection for further interaction. Start with these tips and watch your fan response grow.
