By request of Social Media Marketing University (SMMU), the City of Atlanta has issued an official proclamation declaring that ‘Social Media Day Atlanta’ will take place on the last Thursday in June annually.

This year, festivities will take place on June 26.

Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell sponsored the proclamation.

“We are happy to proclaim June 26 as ‘Social Media Day Atlanta,’” said Council President Mitchell.

“We live in an exciting time, with opportunities to create and sustain relationships that span the globe. Social media allows us to leverage technology to expand and increase the reach of community engagement.”

Atlanta is home to a number of social enterprises, including Insightpool, Badgy, Silverpop, MailChimp, SalesLoft, Social123 and SMMU, the company responsible for spearheading the proclamation.

SMMU (www.smmu.com) is a social media training and management firm with more than 125,000 students and clients featured by Fox Business News, Mashable, Inc. and Forbes. The company’s founder, John Souza, was named ‘Social Media Marketer of the Year’ in 2011 by the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG).

“Atlanta’s civic leaders are committed to positioning our city as a hub for innovation, and many of the innovators that call this city home are social entrepreneurs or influencers,” said Souza. “So it’s only fitting that Atlanta have an official day when we can recognize established and aspiring leaders who are contributing to the phenomenal evolution and impact of social media.”

Governor Nathan Deal and the State of Georgia also support the establishment of ‘Social Media Day Atlanta.’

“On behalf of this state, it is a pleasure to be part of this innovative event recognizing the importance of social media in today’s society,” wrote Deal.

“The ability of technological innovation to connect businesses, organizations, communities and individuals through cutting edge online platforms is vital to the advancement of Georgia and our nation. I commend Social Media Marketing University for organizing this day and send my best wishes for a successful and enjoyable celebration,” Deal continued.
