Social Media Bad Habits Brands Should Give Up Forever

These days no matter where we go, social media surrounds us. It appears as if everyone is asking us to follow their tweets on Twitter, or Like their pictures on Facebook. It is crystal clear that social media is here to stay, and businesses know it.  However, what many businesses are not aware of is the fact that there are many social media bad habits that still need to be broken in order to leverage social media strategies completely.

Prevalence of Typos

Typos are common, so proofreading should be just as common. When you post typos in social media, not only is this a poor reflection of your brand, but these errors like misspelled words or wrong punctuation spread very quickly. So if you want to put your best brand image forward, it’s critical that you always double-check and proofread your content before posting.

Monitoring the Wrong Social Media Metrics

There are many businesses out there which rely solely on how many followers they have to determine that their social media marketing strategies are working. While a large number of followers may reflect the reach of the content you post on various social media sites, you should not base your complete strategy on simply gaining more followers. Take a more comprehensive approach and start asking more relevant questions that will help you reach your overall marketing goals, such as:

  • How often do people engage with your brand on social media sites?
  • Do your social media strategies drive traffic back to your website?
  • What are the sources of your social media traffic generation?
  • Which devices does your audience use to access your social media content?

Overuse of Hashtags

Hashtags are a great way to build community around conversations, but it’s important to use them strategically.  If you’re commonly using 12 hashtags in posts composed of 24 words, you’ve gone overboard and this is a definitely a habit you need to break. Not sure what’s acceptable? It is recommended that you use not more than four hashtags in a post.

Posting Useless, Irrelevant Content

Remember, while useless content (such as pictures of your pets) and engagement-baiting questions (such as “What’s your favorite cuisine?”) can help you get comments and likes, is this type of content and engagement really adding any value to your brand or business? Probably not. So, stop wasting your time by posting irrelevant content and start focusing on content that’s industry-specific and tailored to your audience.

Excessive Retweeting 

Retweeting can be helpful in building your audience and getting people to retweet your content, however it’s important to note that your timeline shouldn’t contain retweets only. Original posts help showcase your brand’s personality and perspective. You want your target audience to resonate with content that you produce, not just content that you retweet.  And when you do retweet, consider personalizing it or and adding your own unique thoughts.

Tagging People to Get Attention

Tagging is fine, but only when it’s appropriate. Tagging for the sake of grabbing someone’s attention often becomes a nuisance and is a great way to alienate fans and followers. Remember, everything you do should be strategic, follow best practices, align with your goals and image and provide value for your audience. Any social media practices that don’t meet one of those four criteria are probably bad social media habits and should be abandoned if you really want to achieve measurable social media success.
